TNL Mediagene Taps AI to Streamline Content, Ads, and Operations Across Asia
TNL Mediagene, the Tokyo-based digital media group formed by the 2023 merger of The News Lens and Mediagene Inc., has announced a sweeping wave of AI-powered upgrades aimed at reshaping everything from content creation to display ad monetization. The initiatives span proprietary tools, productivity integrations, and audience-targeting innovations—all pointing to a central thesis: AI isn’t a side project—it’s the strategy.
At the core of the announcement is “AI Audience + AI Creative,” a new offering from subsidiary Ad2iction (Ad2). This integrated AdTech product pairs language models with generative tech, automating marketing processes by up to 70% and accelerating creative production across campaigns.
But the upgrades don’t stop at flashy ad tech. The company is also seeing measurable cost reductions and workflow efficiencies thanks to AI-enhanced operations—including a 5% drop in human capital intensity across the group in May 2025 vs. the same month last year.
“AI has been a game-changer for us—on both the revenue and cost sides of the business,” said Joey Chung, Co-Founder and CEO. “We’re building a long-term strategy around it, including M&A.”
AI for Ads, Audiences, and Editorial Speed
The AI Audience engine is underpinned by five intelligent modules, including:
- Over 18 million audience behavior data points
- Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) for strategy
- Real-time customer data fusion
- Dynamic audience matching algorithms
- Automated decision-support reports
Meanwhile, AI Creative generates animated ad units at scale, reducing production time and boosting flexibility—making even small marketing teams feel a whole lot bigger.
In tandem, these tools are giving TNL Mediagene clients, particularly in the Media & Branded Content unit, a performance edge. Since launching a third-party display ad optimization platform in 2023, RPMs (revenue per mille) have significantly increased, validating AI’s revenue potential in traditional display inventory.
AI That Speaks Every Language
One of the company’s quieter—but no less impactful—wins is on the editorial side. A proprietary AI-powered content translation and syndication system has processed 5,000+ articles since launch, enabling faster multilingual publishing across Japan, Taiwan, and soon, Business Insider Taiwan.
More than 50% of Roomie Taiwan’s content in May was generated through this system—each article needing less than an hour of human editing.
Google Gemini, Real-Time Meetings, and a Human-AI Balance
Internally, the integration of Google Gemini into productivity tools like Workspace is bearing fruit. AI is now drafting emails, summarizing documents, and translating in real time during meetings—streamlining workflows and reducing labor demands.
Still, both Chung and Motoko Imada, Co-Founder and President, emphasize that AI won’t replace editorial integrity.
“We want to explore AI methods that enhance—not compromise—the quality of human-created content,” said Imada. “Our mission is still rooted in credibility and engagement.”
Fueling the AI Community
TNL Mediagene isn’t just using AI—it’s helping build the conversation around it. In May, it co-hosted the 2025 Generative AI Conference, drawing 1,000+ industry professionals. It also ran community events like AI First Lounge via Gizmodo Japan and Tech Insider, reinforcing its positioning as both a media operator and a regional AI thought leader.
With a footprint across Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, and a workforce of around 500 employees, the company is steadily transforming into Asia’s AI-first media engine—leveraging tech not just to reduce costs, but to reinvent how digital media is produced, monetized, and scaled.
