AI-Powered Audience Measurement Sets New Standard for Metro Advertising in Asia

JCDecaux Transport has completed a landmark pilot in Asia’s metro advertising space, harnessing AI analytics to bring precision and accountability to outdoor campaigns. The initiative, rolled out at the Iconic Digital Zone in Tsim Sha Tsui Station, is among the first in the region to provide real-time, data-driven audience insights for transit advertising.

Smarter Advertising with AI
Using SmartRetail’s advanced AI analytics and computer vision, the pilot captured key metrics like footfall, movement direction, screen engagement, and demographic estimates—all in real time and without storing any personally identifiable information (PII). This approach allows advertisers to move beyond guesses, offering granular insights that can directly inform campaign strategy.

Validated Accuracy and Trust
The pilot’s methodology was independently audited by global market research firm Ipsos. Results confirmed strong directional tracking, high accuracy in demographic classification, and precise age estimation, with a mean absolute error of just 4.5 years. These findings signal that AI-driven measurement can deliver reliable, actionable insights at scale.

Implications for the Industry
JCDecaux’s pilot sets a new benchmark for metro advertising, positioning MTR* advertising as a leader in data-driven innovation. By transforming stations into dynamic media platforms, the initiative demonstrates how AI can boost transparency, engagement, and campaign effectiveness, giving brands a measurable edge in high-traffic transit environments.

Shirley Chan, Managing Director at JCDecaux Transport, said, “This pilot transforms outdoor advertising into a dynamic media platform, empowering brands with trusted, data-rich insights. It’s a new era where accountability and measurable impact guide every campaign.”

With this successful pilot, AI-powered audience measurement is poised to reshape metro advertising across Asia, offering advertisers smarter ways to connect with commuters in impactful ways.
