Two Orioles, a specialist in video compression technology, has joined the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) at the Promoter level, signaling a push toward more efficient, high-quality video streaming.
As a member, Two Orioles will collaborate with some of the world’s top internet and media tech companies, contributing to the AOMedia Codec Working Group and the Software Implementation Working Group. The focus: advancing AV1 and the upcoming AV2 codecs, which promise smoother, higher-quality video delivery with less bandwidth.
“As AOMedia continues to improve the future of video compression, we continue to improve the future of video encoders,” said Ronald Bultje, Founder of Two Orioles. “We’re excited to play a hand in the development of the standard we work so closely with in our products, especially as we transition to AV2.”
Why AV2 Matters
AV2 is a generational leap in open video coding. Compared to AV1, it offers significantly better compression efficiency, enabling faster, higher-quality streaming with lower data usage. It also supports emerging media formats like AR/VR, split-screen multi-program delivery, improved screen content handling, and a wider visual quality range—making it ideal for next-generation streaming platforms.
Dr. Pierre-Anthony Lemieux, AOMedia Executive Director, added, “We’re excited to welcome Two Orioles to the Alliance. This reflects our shared commitment to harness AV1 and AV2 to improve media experiences in innovative ways. Collaborations like this push us closer to true internet video interoperability.”
Implications for Streaming and AdTech
As streaming demand continues to surge, codec efficiency becomes increasingly critical—not just for reducing bandwidth costs, but for enabling new content formats and immersive experiences. Two Orioles’ participation in AOMedia could accelerate AV2 adoption, giving advertisers and platforms more flexibility in delivering high-quality video across screens, from traditional streaming to AR/VR and interactive formats. Competitors in the open codec space, like Netflix and Google, are also driving AV1/AV2 adoption, making industry collaboration key to standardization and broad implementation.
