Programmatic advertising has become increasingly sophisticated at identifying audiences, but live sports introduces another variable advertisers cannot easily capture from audience data alone: the moment when attention peaks. Genius Sports is partnering with Equativ and StackAdapt to bring real-time game signals into programmatic media buying, allowing brands to activate campaigns and dynamically adjust creative as events unfold on the field.
A football interception, a last-second basketball shot or a game-winning drive can change the mood of a sports audience within seconds. Traditional advertising schedules, however, cannot respond to those changes. The same creative may run whether a game is uneventful or approaching a decisive moment.
Genius Sports wants to change that dynamic.
The sports data and technology company has partnered with Equativ and StackAdapt to make its Moment Engine available within StackAdapt’s programmatic advertising workflow. The technology uses live sports data feeds to identify significant moments during games, allowing advertisers to use those signals to determine when campaigns should become more relevant.
The partnership combines three separate capabilities: Genius Sports provides live game intelligence and sports audiences, Equativ contributes creative enhancement and dynamic creative technology, while StackAdapt provides the programmatic buying environment.
That combination effectively adds a “when” signal to audience targeting.
Advertisers have traditionally focused heavily on identifying who they want to reach. Live sports data can add another dimension: determining when those viewers are experiencing a particularly relevant or emotional event.
StackAdapt buyers can access selected Genius Sports Moments audience deals through programmatic Deal IDs in the platform’s marketplace. The Genius Sports Deal Library is designed to let advertisers activate predefined moment-based audiences without rebuilding campaigns or trafficking new creative.
Equativ’s technology can also enhance existing CTV, video or display creative with live information such as scores and upcoming matchups.
The second activation route, described as Custom High-Impact, goes further. Equativ’s high-impact creative technology can dynamically change campaign messaging based on live Genius Sports Moments, allowing advertisements to respond to events such as interceptions or game-winning plays.
The distinction is important for programmatic buyers. This is not simply contextual targeting based on a sports program or league. The system is designed to connect advertising activation with specific events occurring during the live broadcast.
That creates a potentially tighter relationship between media, creative and audience attention.
The strategy also targets the expanding “second screen” behavior surrounding live sports. Genius Sports and Equativ cite research indicating that 84% of sports fans use a companion device such as a mobile phone while watching a broadcast. Equativ also reports that sports fans are 91% more likely to pay attention to advertising featuring a relevant live score.
Those figures are company-reported research and should be treated accordingly, but the underlying advertising opportunity is well established: viewers increasingly move between television and connected devices during major live events.
For advertisers, this creates an opportunity to synchronize campaigns with the emotional rhythm of a game rather than treating the event as a static media environment.
It also gives programmatic platforms another potential source of contextual intelligence.
StackAdapt already provides automated media buying across channels including CTV, video and display. Integrating live sports signals means buyers can potentially incorporate real-time context without abandoning their existing buying workflow.
The technology could be particularly relevant for brands that have natural connections to sports. Sports betting, beverages, automotive, food delivery, financial services and consumer technology advertisers can all build creative around scores, momentum or match outcomes, although execution must still account for league rights, advertising restrictions and platform policies.
Genius Sports says its data relationships span more than 400 leagues and federations globally, covering sports including football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer and golf. That gives the model an opportunity to move beyond championship games and other major tentpole events toward always-on seasonal campaigns.
For publishers and rights holders, the development points to another evolution in sports media monetization. Rather than creating more conventional commercial breaks, advertising technology can use the content itself as a real-time signal for determining audience relevance and creative timing.
The broader implication extends beyond sports.
As advertising platforms gain access to increasingly granular contextual signals, the industry is moving from audience-based buying toward context-aware activation. Weather, location, content, cultural events and live moments can all potentially influence when and how an advertisement is delivered.
Genius Sports, Equativ and StackAdapt are applying that concept to one of the most data-rich environments in media: live sports.
The challenge will be proving that moment-based activation delivers better business outcomes without creating excessive complexity for advertisers or distracting audiences. If it does, live data could become another important layer in the programmatic advertising stack.
Market Landscape
The programmatic advertising market is moving beyond basic demographic and behavioral targeting toward real-time contextual signals and automated creative optimization.
CTV and digital video are particularly suited to this transition because advertisers can combine audience data, content context and dynamic creative within increasingly automated buying environments. Companies including Google, Amazon, The Trade Desk and StackAdapt are competing across different parts of this broader programmatic ecosystem.
The sports opportunity is distinctive because live events generate measurable spikes in attention and emotional engagement. A real-time data feed can turn those events into signals that advertising platforms can potentially use for audience segmentation, activation and creative personalization.
The Genius Sports model therefore sits at the intersection of sports data, programmatic advertising, CTV, dynamic creative optimization and contextual targeting.
For enterprise media teams, the value proposition is less about another isolated ad format and more about connecting existing buying infrastructure with live contextual intelligence.
