Television manufacturers are increasingly treating the TV as an AI-powered computing platform rather than a passive display. At IFA 2026 in Berlin, LG Electronics is showcasing its 2026 AI TV lineup, built around the α11 AI Processor Gen3 and a collection of personalized features designed to recommend content, troubleshoot settings and adapt the viewing experience to individual users.

The next battleground in smart TVs may have less to do with screen size and more to do with how well the television understands its owner.

LG Electronics is using IFA 2026 to showcase a new generation of AI-powered TVs that combine advanced picture processing with user profiles, conversational assistance, personalized recommendations and integrated security.

The company’s 2026 lineup is centered on the α11 AI Processor Gen3, which LG describes as its most powerful AI TV processor to date. The processor was initially introduced across this year’s OLED evo range and is now being extended to LG’s ultra-large Micro RGB evo televisions.

According to LG, the processor delivers a 5.6-fold improvement in neural processing unit (NPU) performance, alongside upgraded CPU and GPU capabilities. The objective is not simply to run AI features but to make computational processing part of everyday television viewing.

One of the processor’s key capabilities is AI Dual 4K Upscaling, which combines two AI-based processing methods to convert lower-resolution material into sharper 4K output.

Audio receives similar computational treatment through AI Sound Pro, which can create a virtual 11.1.2-channel sound experience.

For TV manufacturers, this is becoming an important distinction. Resolution improvements are increasingly difficult to communicate once premium televisions already offer 4K or higher-quality panels. AI processing provides another avenue for differentiation by improving source material, sound and interaction rather than relying solely on hardware specifications.

LG’s processor has also received external recognition. Tom’s Guide named the α11 AI Processor among its 2026 AI Awards, emphasizing AI products that address practical problems rather than simply adding AI as a marketing feature.

The more interesting development, however, sits above the picture-processing layer.

LG is positioning its 2026 televisions as personalized entertainment platforms capable of recognizing users and adapting recommendations and settings accordingly.

Its Voice ID feature uses voice recognition to identify individual users and switch to their profiles. Recommendations can then be influenced by viewing history and personal preferences.

That turns voice control into something closer to an identity layer.

Instead of simply asking a TV to open an application or search for a movie, users can receive recommendations tied to their own profile. For households where multiple people share the same television, this could reduce one of the longstanding problems with smart-TV personalization: a single device often represents several very different viewers.

LG is also adding an AI Chatbot designed to interpret natural-language descriptions of television problems.

A user who says the screen is too dark, for example, can receive guidance identifying the relevant setting and instructions for changing it. The concept is straightforward, but it points toward a larger shift in consumer electronics: replacing menus and technical troubleshooting with conversational interfaces.

The company’s AI Concierge takes personalization a step further. Built into webOS 26, it analyzes viewing history and habits to recommend content, search terms and relevant features. Users access it through the AI button on the remote, with recommendations presented through cards.

For the streaming ecosystem, this type of recommendation layer has implications beyond convenience.

The TV is increasingly becoming the point where viewers discover content from multiple services. Platforms such as Netflix, Amazon and Google have built recommendation engines around their own ecosystems, while smart-TV operating systems increasingly act as aggregators across apps and services.

LG’s approach puts its own AI layer closer to the hardware and operating system.

That could eventually become important for media discovery and advertising. As smart-TV manufacturers gain more insight into viewing behavior, preferences and content discovery, their operating systems become increasingly valuable distribution and audience platforms.

For advertisers, that creates a potential intersection between CTV, streaming discovery and first-party TV data. LG has not announced a new advertising product as part of this IFA presentation, so it would be premature to treat the AI features as an advertising platform. But the underlying infrastructure could support increasingly personalized content and commercial experiences over time.

Personalization also raises the question of privacy.

LG is addressing that through LG Shield, its integrated security framework for webOS. The company says the system incorporates seven security technologies covering secure algorithms, data storage and transmission, user authentication, software integrity, secure updates and security-event detection.

That architecture is particularly relevant as televisions become more capable of processing personal information.

A conventional television primarily needed to protect device and network access. An AI television that recognizes voices, maintains user profiles and analyzes viewing behavior has a larger data-security surface.

LG Shield was recognized in the cybersecurity category of the CES 2026 Innovation Awards, according to the company.

LG is also promising up to five years of complimentary webOS upgrades, potentially extending the useful life of the software environment after purchase.

That is becoming increasingly important in connected consumer electronics. Hardware may remain functional for years, but software support determines whether users continue receiving new features, security updates and compatibility with evolving streaming services.

LG’s strategy therefore resembles a broader transition occurring across consumer technology. Companies such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon have increasingly integrated AI into operating systems and devices, while TV manufacturers are adapting similar ideas to the living room.

The television is becoming an interface for AI, content discovery and connected services.

The remaining question is whether consumers will find these features genuinely useful or simply tolerate another layer of automation.

LG’s approach at IFA 2026 suggests the company believes the winning AI television will be one that quietly removes friction: finding something to watch, correcting a setting, switching profiles or improving content quality without forcing users through complicated menus.

That makes the α11 AI Processor Gen3 more than a picture-quality component. It is becoming the computational foundation for LG’s broader vision of an adaptive TV platform.

Market Landscape

The smart-TV market is evolving from hardware competition toward software, AI and platform competition.

OLED, Micro RGB and large-screen technologies remain important differentiators, but manufacturers increasingly need to build recurring engagement around their operating systems. Personalized recommendations, voice interfaces and AI troubleshooting can turn a television into a persistent software platform rather than a device used only to access external streaming services.

For the advertising ecosystem, that transition could be significant. CTV already provides advertisers with increasingly sophisticated targeting and measurement capabilities. AI-powered TV operating systems could eventually add another layer of first-party behavioral intelligence, content discovery and contextual signals.

Companies such as Google, Amazon and Samsung are competing across adjacent parts of this ecosystem, while streaming providers continue developing their own recommendation environments.

LG’s five-year webOS upgrade commitment also highlights another competitive issue: software longevity. As TVs become connected computing devices, the quality and duration of platform support can become as important as panel specifications.

The immediate IFA 2026 story is therefore about AI-powered viewing. The longer-term story is about who controls the intelligent interface between consumers, content and connected-TV services.
