GumGum Turns Verified Sports Sponsorship Exposure Into Addressable Audiences

Sports sponsorship has always had a measurement problem: knowing that a brand appeared during a game is not the same as knowing which households actually saw it. GumGum is attempting to close that gap with a new advertising product that turns verified sponsorship exposure into audiences brands can reach after the broadcast.

The company has launched GumGum Sports Media, combining sponsorship measurement from its Relo Metrics division with household-level viewership data from VideoAmp. The resulting audiences can be activated across web, connected TV and online video in the U.S.

The basic idea is straightforward, but it changes where sports sponsorship data can fit inside an advertising stack.

Relo Metrics uses computer vision and machine learning to identify sponsorship appearances during live broadcasts, including when a brand logo or placement appears on screen. VideoAmp then provides viewership information that can identify households watching at the relevant time. GumGum connects those signals and turns them into addressable audiences.

That creates a chain from exposure to audience activation.

Traditionally, a sponsorship report might tell a brand how often its logo appeared, how long it remained visible or what estimated audience watched the broadcast. Those measurements can help determine sponsorship value, but they do not necessarily provide an audience that can be reached again through digital advertising.

GumGum Sports Media is designed to make that final step possible.

Its Replay product allows sponsors to reach fans verified to have seen their own sponsorship placement. Counterplay takes the more aggressive route, allowing brands to target viewers who were exposed to a competitor’s sponsorship. Sports Audiences uses VideoAmp’s viewership data to build audiences around sports and leagues based on verified viewing rather than inferred interests.

The products initially cover major U.S. sports properties including the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, NWSL, F1 and NCAA Football. GumGum says campaigns can run across web, CTV and online video.

The timing is significant. Sports are becoming increasingly important to the fragmented video advertising market as premium live programming moves across broadcast, streaming and connected-TV platforms.

IAB projects U.S. digital video advertising will surpass $80 billion in 2026, with CTV, online video and social video all contributing to growth. The organization also identifies targeting as an increasingly important consideration for video buyers.

That puts pressure on sports advertising to become more measurable and addressable.

The underlying technology also reflects a broader change in media measurement. Automatic content recognition, computer vision and household-level viewing signals can provide a more granular picture of what audiences actually consumed. IAB has been pushing the industry toward more consistent cross-channel measurement as fragmentation makes reach, exposure and attribution harder to compare.

GumGum’s proposition sits at the intersection of those developments.

It is not a replacement for a DSP, nor is Relo Metrics simply another sponsorship analytics dashboard. Instead, GumGum is attempting to convert a sponsorship measurement signal into an audience segment that can enter downstream digital media activation.

That distinction matters for advertisers and agencies. A brand sponsoring an NFL broadcast, for example, could use verified exposure data to reach households that actually saw its placement later through CTV or online video. A competing brand could use the same infrastructure to reach households exposed to another company’s sponsorship.

The approach also raises questions about identity, privacy and measurement consistency. Household-level activation must work within the rules of the underlying data providers and advertising platforms, while advertisers still need independent evidence that post-event targeting contributed to business outcomes.

Those issues will become more important as sports viewing continues to spread across linear television, streaming services and connected devices.

For enterprise media teams, the larger lesson is that sponsorship data is becoming more useful when it can move beyond reporting. The value of knowing that an audience saw a brand depends increasingly on what an advertiser can do with that information afterward.

GumGum is betting that the next generation of sports advertising will connect those two stages: measure the exposure, identify the audience and activate the audience across media.

Market Landscape

Sports advertising is becoming part of a broader convergence between sponsorship, CTV and addressable media. As premium sports rights spread across broadcast and streaming platforms, advertisers increasingly need audience signals that work across fragmented viewing environments.

IAB projects U.S. CTV advertising to grow 13.8% in 2026, while overall digital video spending surpasses $80 billion.

At the same time, measurement remains fragmented. IAB’s measurement initiatives emphasize standardized definitions for exposure, reach, frequency and outcomes across CTV and other video environments.

GumGum’s approach occupies a specific position within that ecosystem: using sponsorship exposure as an audience signal for subsequent digital activation.

That puts it alongside, rather than directly against, DSPs, CTV measurement companies, sponsorship analytics platforms and audience-data providers. Its differentiator is the attempt to connect the sponsorship moment itself with an addressable audience.
