AI is moving deeper into television production, from isolated tools for graphics and editing to systems that can coordinate entire workflows. Vizrt, the visual storytelling technology company, has been named a Leader in the IDC MarketScape: Worldwide AI-Driven Business Cycle in the Media Industry, 2026 Vendor Assessment, highlighting the growing importance of AI orchestration in live broadcasting and media production.

The next phase of AI adoption in media may be less about generating individual pieces of content and more about coordinating the machinery required to produce them.

That shift is at the center of Vizrt’s latest strategy. The company has been recognized as a Leader in IDC’s 2026 assessment of vendors helping media organizations apply AI across business and production workflows.

IDC’s assessment is significant because it looks beyond individual AI features. The research examines vendors based on capabilities, strategy, innovation and market execution, while the broader 2026 MarketScape identifies a move toward AI orchestration spanning business operations, production, distribution and monetization.

For broadcasters, that distinction matters. A newsroom or live sports operation rarely depends on one application. Graphics, media assets, newsroom systems, automation, data and distribution all have to work together, often under intense time pressure.

Vizrt’s approach is to put an orchestration layer across those systems through its AI Production Director. The platform connects Viz Engine, Viz Artist, Viz One, Viz Mosart and Viz Pilot through specialized AI agents designed for different production tasks.

Those agents include Story Producer, Asset Discovery, Graphics Intelligence, Data Storyteller and Distribution. A knowledge-base agent can also incorporate production preferences, editorial conventions and brand requirements, allowing AI-assisted workflows to operate within rules established by the production team.

That architecture is the more interesting part of IDC’s recognition. Rather than positioning AI as another standalone production assistant, Vizrt is attempting to make it a coordination layer across an existing broadcast technology stack.

IDC Research Director Alex Holtz described the approach as treating live production as a “composable, agentic problem,” pointing specifically to the orchestration of Vizrt’s production applications through specialized agents.

The model also reflects a broader change in enterprise AI. IDC reported in 2026 that 50% of organizations were already deploying AI agents in production across multiple business areas, while another 27% had agents running in at least one area.

Media companies are therefore moving into a phase where the question is no longer simply whether to use AI, but how multiple AI capabilities should be coordinated safely inside production environments.

For broadcasters, human oversight remains particularly important. Live news, sports and regulated programming leave little room for an automated system to make an inappropriate editorial or brand decision. AI can accelerate asset discovery, graphics preparation, data interpretation and distribution, but producers still need authority over what ultimately reaches viewers.

Vizrt is also emphasizing interoperability rather than building a completely closed AI environment. The company has adopted the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for agent interoperability and participates in industry standards initiatives including JT-DMF, MXL and OGraf. Its API-first architecture is designed to support cloud, on-premises and hybrid deployments.

That open approach could become increasingly important as broadcasters assemble technology from multiple vendors. Microsoft, NVIDIA, Adobe and other major technology providers are pushing AI deeper into enterprise workflows, making interoperability a central consideration for organizations that do not want their production infrastructure locked into one AI ecosystem.

Vizrt also has an advantage that newer AI startups cannot easily manufacture: years of experience in live production. Its technology is used across broadcast, sports and other high-pressure environments, while products such as Viz Libero and Viz Arena extend its capabilities into sports production and virtual advertising.

The company’s challenge now is proving that agentic AI can deliver measurable operational improvements without introducing new complexity.

IDC’s broader 2026 research found that only 3.1% of organizations worldwide had reached its highest AI maturity stage, while 61.3% remained in the two least mature stages. That gap suggests that production-grade AI will depend as much on governance, integration and workflow design as on model performance.

For media organizations, Vizrt’s positioning points toward a future in which AI does not replace the production stack. Instead, it sits above it—coordinating tools, data and repetitive decisions while leaving editorial judgment with the people responsible for the broadcast.

That could prove to be a more practical path for broadcasters than simply adding another generative AI tool to an already crowded production environment.

Market Landscape

The media industry’s AI market is shifting from isolated automation toward orchestrated production workflows. IDC’s 2026 assessment specifically identifies orchestration architecture, data governance and outcome measurement as increasingly important competitive factors.

IDC has also identified media orchestration, cross-platform workflow automation, intelligent content creation and live-content decisioning among the industry’s emerging AI use cases.

This creates an opening for established broadcast technology vendors. Companies such as Vizrt can potentially differentiate by combining AI with production infrastructure already trusted by broadcasters rather than asking media organizations to rebuild their workflows around a new AI platform.

The competitive pressure, however, will come from both traditional broadcast technology companies and hyperscalers. NVIDIA, Microsoft, Adobe and cloud providers are building increasingly capable AI infrastructure and creative tooling, while broadcasters themselves are developing proprietary automation and AI workflows.

The differentiator will increasingly be orchestration: how well a platform connects existing systems, preserves editorial control, supports hybrid infrastructure and produces measurable gains in production efficiency.
