Topsort Expands Commerce Media Into CTV With Universal Ads

Topsort Brings Retail Media Into CTV Topsort Brings Retail Media Into CTV

Topsort has launched Universal Ads, a new offsite advertising channel that lets retailers and marketplaces extend existing advertiser programs into CTV, streaming and digital publisher inventory. The offering connects commerce-media demand with premium video inventory through Topsort’s existing Offsite workflow.

Retail media networks have traditionally centered on the digital properties that retailers and marketplaces control. As commerce media expands, however, the next challenge is extending that advertiser demand beyond search results, product pages and marketplace environments.

Topsort is addressing that shift with Universal Ads, a new Offsite channel that enables retailers and marketplaces to activate advertiser campaigns across connected TV, streaming and digital inventory.

The AI-native monetization infrastructure company says the offering can connect commerce advertisers with inventory from major publishers, including NBCUniversal, Paramount and Warner Bros. The initial availability covers North America and Europe.

The launch reflects a broader change in how retail and commerce media is being structured. Retailers have accumulated advertiser demand based on their relationships with brands and sellers, while consumers increasingly divide their attention among marketplaces, social platforms, search engines, streaming services and other digital environments.

Universal Ads is designed to give commerce businesses a way to take that existing demand into those environments without creating a separate advertising workflow for each channel.

Advertisers using the system select Video and Universal Ads, upload a video of up to 60 seconds, establish a budget and bidding strategy, and launch the campaign. Because the campaigns are video-based rather than product-based, Topsort says advertisers do not need to synchronize a product catalog for this channel.

That distinction makes the offering particularly relevant to commerce-media operators that want to move beyond product advertising.

Retail media has historically benefited from strong purchase-intent signals because advertising can be placed close to a consumer’s shopping activity. Offsite advertising introduces a different proposition: bringing commerce-derived advertiser demand into environments where consumers may be earlier in the consideration journey.

CTV illustrates the measurement challenge.

Unlike an online product listing or display advertisement, a television ad generally does not provide a clickable destination. Topsort therefore uses view-through attribution for CTV campaigns rather than relying on click-through attribution.

That creates a different measurement framework for commerce advertisers accustomed to performance metrics generated directly within retail or marketplace environments. The ability to connect exposure with subsequent consumer activity will become increasingly important as commerce media expands into streaming and other upper-funnel environments.

The technology also points toward a changing role for retail media infrastructure. Instead of operating as a collection of individual onsite advertising products, commerce-media platforms are increasingly becoming systems for managing advertiser demand across multiple environments.

For retailers and marketplaces, that could mean monetizing relationships with advertisers across a wider media footprint. For brands, it can provide another route to activate campaigns through commerce-media relationships while reaching audiences outside the retailer’s own digital properties.

Topsort says Universal Ads can reach up to 90% of U.S. households through its CTV inventory. The company is positioning the product as an extension of its Offsite capabilities rather than as a standalone advertising network.

The development also highlights the convergence between retail media, programmatic advertising and CTV. Retailers increasingly have valuable first-party commerce signals and established advertiser relationships, while premium media owners have large-scale video audiences. Infrastructure that can connect those two sides represents an important part of the emerging commerce-media ecosystem.

The longer-term question is how effectively these systems can balance scale with the performance and measurement expectations that made retail media attractive to advertisers in the first place.

Universal Ads is now available as an Offsite channel through Topsort, giving retailers and marketplaces another mechanism for taking commerce-media demand beyond their owned shopping environments.

Market Landscape

Retail media is expanding from onsite sponsored products and search placements into offsite display, social, video and CTV. This expansion gives retailers more opportunities to monetize advertiser relationships, but it also introduces different buying, attribution and inventory-management requirements.

CTV is particularly significant because it combines television-scale reach with increasingly addressable digital advertising infrastructure. For commerce-media operators, connecting advertiser demand to CTV inventory creates potential incremental revenue while giving brands access to audiences outside retailer-owned properties.

The measurement model differs from onsite retail advertising. CTV campaigns typically rely on exposure and subsequent-action measurement rather than direct clicks, making view-through attribution and identity infrastructure important components of the ecosystem.

Topsort’s Universal Ads launch illustrates how commerce-media platforms are evolving toward cross-channel monetization infrastructure, where retailers and marketplaces can manage advertiser demand across both commerce environments and external media.
