Pinterest Brings Visual Search Into Performance Advertising

Pinterest Launches Visual Search Ads Pinterest Launches Visual Search Ads

Pinterest is expanding its performance advertising business into visual search, introducing Visual Search Ads that put paid placements inside Search Results and Pin closeups. The format is designed to connect advertisers with users who are evaluating visual ideas, products and styles rather than relying solely on conventional keyword-based queries.

Announced at Pinterest Presents on September 17, Visual Search Ads allow eligible advertisers to bid for prominent responses and send users directly to their websites. Pinterest says the product will initially launch in beta across its advertising markets and supports lower-funnel objectives through its Pinterest Performance+ advertising suite.

The technology reflects a broader change in how product discovery can occur. Instead of starting with a precise textual query such as a product name or category, a Pinterest user can begin with an image, inspect an object within a Pin or search for visually similar products. Pinterest’s existing visual-search tools can identify objects and return related ideas or purchasable products, creating a data layer that connects images with commercial intent.

Visual Search Ads extend that discovery infrastructure into paid media. In practical terms, the advertising opportunity moves closer to the point where a user is comparing visual options. That gives Pinterest another performance-oriented placement while allowing advertisers to participate in discovery that may not map neatly to traditional keyword targeting.

Pinterest says its users conduct more than 80 billion searches each month, with the vast majority being visual and more than half having a commercial purpose. Those figures are company-reported and therefore should be treated as Pinterest’s measurement of activity rather than an independently verified market statistic.

The launch also adds more controls to Pinterest’s automated advertising stack. Performance+ Priority Products will let advertisers identify products they want emphasized during specific commercial moments, while self-serve A/B testing is intended to give marketers more control over experiments involving creative, targeting and Performance+ campaigns. App Promotion is also entering global beta for qualified advertisers.

For performance marketers, the more important development is the convergence of visual understanding and paid search. Search advertising has historically depended heavily on text signals: keywords, queries, categories and landing-page relevance. Visual search introduces another layer in which an image itself can carry information about style, product characteristics and consumer intent.

That could be particularly relevant to categories such as fashion, home furnishings, beauty and consumer products, where users may recognize what they want visually before they can describe it precisely. Pinterest’s previous advertising products have already moved search placements toward this model, including Top of Search ads introduced in 2025.

The commercial question will be whether visual intent can translate into measurable outcomes at scale. Advertisers will need to evaluate not only click-through performance but also downstream conversions, product relevance and incremental value compared with existing search and social placements.

Pinterest’s announcement therefore represents an expansion of performance advertising around its core visual-discovery environment. The beta phase will provide the more meaningful test: whether visual signals can become a repeatable buying input for advertisers without reducing the discovery experience that makes the platform distinctive.

Market Landscape

Visual search is becoming an increasingly important component of Pinterest’s advertising strategy. The platform says it now processes more than 80 billion searches per month, with most searches being visual and more than half having commercial intent. These are Pinterest-reported figures rather than independent industry measurements.

The advertising model builds on an existing shift from conventional text search toward image-led product discovery. Pinterest’s visual-search functionality allows users to search images, isolate objects within Pins and find similar products where shopping functionality is available.

Pinterest also introduced Top of Search ads in 2025, placing paid products within prominent search-result positions. Visual Search Ads extend the company’s search monetization strategy from conventional search-result relevance toward image-based discovery.

For advertisers, this creates another performance-media environment in which visual relevance, product catalogs, AI-based image understanding and conversion measurement intersect.

Strategic Outlook

The strategic significance is the shift from keyword intent to multimodal intent.

For advertisers, Visual Search Ads create another route to reach consumers who may demonstrate commercial interest through images rather than explicit product queries.

For retail and consumer brands, the model could be particularly relevant where product choice is strongly influenced by appearance, style or context.

For Pinterest, the launch expands monetizable inventory around one of its core user behaviors while connecting visual discovery more directly with performance advertising.

The main operational question is measurement. Advertisers will need to determine whether visual-search placements produce incremental conversions or primarily redistribute demand that existing Pinterest campaigns already capture.

The beta rollout should provide the first meaningful evidence on that question.
