Electric aircraft developer Vertical Aerospace has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sigma Air Mobility, an advanced air mobility operator backed by the Luxaviation Group, to support the future deployment of its Valo electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Beyond a planned aircraft purchase, the agreement focuses on operational readiness, commercial deployment, and ecosystem development as the aviation industry prepares for the commercialization of electric air mobility.

The race to commercialize electric aviation is increasingly shifting from aircraft development to building the operational ecosystem required for large-scale deployment. Vertical Aerospace’s latest partnership with Sigma Air Mobility reflects that transition, emphasizing not only future aircraft sales but also the infrastructure, operational expertise, and commercial planning needed to bring electric air taxis into everyday service.

The agreement establishes a framework under which Sigma Air Mobility intends to acquire Vertical Aerospace’s Valo eVTOL aircraft while collaborating on operational testing, aircraft integration, customer requirements, and commercial readiness.

Rather than treating aircraft delivery as the end goal, the partnership focuses on preparing operators for the realities of launching commercial electric aviation services. That includes validating operational procedures, understanding passenger requirements, integrating aircraft into existing aviation networks, and supporting certification-driven deployment strategies.

Sigma Air Mobility is part of the Luxaviation Group, one of the world’s largest private aviation operators. The Luxembourg-based aviation company manages a fleet of more than 200 business aircraft and operates a global network of fixed-base operations (FBOs) through its ExecuJet business. That operational experience could prove valuable as advanced air mobility developers transition from prototype testing to commercial operations.

For Vertical Aerospace, early engagement with operators has become a core component of aircraft development. Commercial operators can provide practical insights into maintenance requirements, flight operations, passenger handling, infrastructure needs, and fleet utilization—areas that become increasingly important once aircraft receive regulatory certification.

The announcement comes as Vertical progresses toward its Critical Design Review (CDR), a significant engineering milestone that establishes the certifiable aircraft design before manufacturing certification-conforming prototypes for regulatory testing. Successfully completing this phase is considered an important step toward eventual certification by aviation authorities.

The company has also continued expanding its supplier ecosystem with aerospace manufacturers including Honeywell Aerospace, Sonaca, Hyundai WIA, Astronics, Syensqo, Evolito, and Isoclima. Strategic supplier partnerships are becoming increasingly important as eVTOL developers seek to leverage established aerospace expertise while reducing manufacturing and certification risks.

The broader advanced air mobility industry remains highly competitive, with companies such as Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, Lilium, Eve Air Mobility, and Beta Technologies all pursuing commercial electric aircraft certification. While aircraft performance remains a key differentiator, many developers are increasingly competing on ecosystem development, airline partnerships, infrastructure readiness, and operational support capabilities.

According to Morgan Stanley, the global urban air mobility market could become a multi-hundred-billion-dollar industry over the coming decades as electric aviation technologies mature and regulatory frameworks evolve. Meanwhile, McKinsey & Company has highlighted advanced air mobility as one of the emerging transportation sectors likely to benefit from continued advances in battery technology, electric propulsion, and digital flight management.

For Vertical Aerospace, the Sigma Air Mobility agreement reinforces an industry-wide shift from proving aircraft technology toward preparing the commercial foundations needed to launch electric aviation at scale.
